Everything You Need to Know About Adirondack Trailways

Adirondack Trailways operates a network of bus services throughout New York State. These services have been transporting people to some of the most beautiful locations in the state for more than 90 years. Whether you’re traveling to or from New York City, you can do so in style and comfort. And you can explore the wider area, too.

Trailways provides services to towns and cities across the Northeastern United States. You can also take a trip to Canada, thanks to regular services to Toronto and Montreal. But what’s traveling with Adirondack Trailways really like? We’ve put together a comprehensive guide that should help you to decide whether or not the service meets your needs.

A Brief History of Adirondack Trailways

The Van Gonsic Berardi family founded the company way back in 1926. But in those days the company went by the name of Rip Van Winkle. The very first service offered by the company ran between New York City and the Hudson Valley. Over the following years, the company initiated new services all over the state. And the mountainous Adirondack region suddenly became a lot closer.

The company began aggressively expanding in reach during the 1990s. New routes to and from Montreal, Toronto, and Long Island opened up. Today, the company carries thousands of passengers around the Northeastern United States every year. That’s more than 80 million miles traveled annually.

Parent company Trailways of New York also operates Pine Hill Trailways, New York Trailways, and NeOn Bus.

Adirondack Trailways Destinations

There are more routes and Trailways stations in the network than ever before. Whether you’re traveling upstate or elsewhere in the New York City area, getting to your destination is quicker and easier than ever.

Here are some of the most popular destinations in the network:

How to Book a Trip with Adirondack Trailways

Traveling with Trailways is easier than ever. There’s a toll-free booking line. All you need to buy tickets is a major credit card. Alternatively, you can book online.

Start by choosing whether you want a one-way or round-trip ticket. Type in the name of your origin location and your final destination. Select a departure date, and enter the number of passengers who’ll be traveling. There are discounts for seniors and children, so input them separately.

Click “Search,” and the website will search for the best travel options. You’ll get a price, as well as a travel itinerary. If the journey meets your needs, you can purchase it online. Log in to your account to buy your tickets, or create a new one.

You have the option of printing your tickets immediately after purchasing them. But Trailways will send your tickets via email, too. You don’t have to wait for tickets to arrive in the mail, meaning you can make travel plans at the last minute.

How Much Do Tickets Cost?

Ticket prices vary according to when and where you are going. A typical round-trip ticket from New York City to New Bedford, Massachusetts, costs around $41, with multiple departure times available. For the same date, a one-person round-trip to Atlantic City, New Jersey, comes at a low price of $28. If you are looking to charter a bus for your entire group, call ahead for a quote. This is a great way to get some very large, bulk-booking discounts.

If you know your date of travel, visit the Trailways website every day. Flash sales are posted all the time. When particular routes aren’t very popular, the company often slash ticket prices — sometimes by as much as 80 percent.

Discounts and Special Offers from Adirondack Trailways

There are some great discounts and special offers available from Trailways — but some of them can change from day to day. Check out the discounts page for details of flash sales. You’ll often pick up tickets for a fraction of their usual price.

If you’re planning to return to New York in the future, consider buying a multi-ride ticket. This is also a good option if you want to explore several destinations during the same trip.

You get 10 tickets in a booklet, which you can use to travel to most of the destinations offered by Trailways.

If you buy a booklet of 10 tickets that’s valid for 15 days, you can save 30 percent on the regular fare. There’s a 25 percent discount for 30-day booklets, a 20 percent discount for 60-day booklets, and a 17.5 percent discount for 90-day tickets.

You can also save money if you’re able to book well in advance. The tickets are non-refundable, but you might be able to save yourself up to 50 percent of the original fare. Advance ticket prices fluctuate daily, so it’s best to call the customer care specialists at Trailways for the latest offers.

There’s a 10 percent discount for serving personnel in the armed forces. Babies under two travel free with a paying adult. And there’s a 25 percent discount for children aged between two and 14.

The Trailways Fleet

Trailways buses are comfortable and stylish. In fact, many of the company’s passengers treat the journey as an integral part of the journey. When you travel with Adirondack Trailways, you can expect the following amenities and benefits:

  • Certified and professionally trained drivers
  • Seatbelts
  • GPS navigation and communication
  • A bathroom
  • Above-seat adjustable reading lights
  • Wi-Fi connection
  • 110-volt seat power outlets
  • TV and DVD
  • Climate control
  • Upholstered reclining seats

Adirondack Trailways has a reputation for providing comfortable and safe journeys throughout Northeastern America. The current fleet consists of more than 130 coaches, each with real wood floors and leather seats. Each seat is ergonomically designed for comfort and safety. And a safety certification from the Department of Defense gives passengers peace of mind.

Guaranteed Seating

You’ll be glad to know that a ticket with Trailways of New York guarantees you a seat for the duration of your journey. You won’t have to stand at any time. But there are some caveats. For example, you must get a ticket reissued if you wish to change your date or time of departure. And there’ll be a $20 fee for the privilege.

Changing your destination or departure time is always possible before you’re meant to travel. But if your time of departure has passed, you’ll only get a refund or a new ticket if you booked at a Trailways terminal. If you booked online, you won’t get a refund. You’ll have to buy a new ticket.

Baggage Rules

Traveling across New York State and beyond is lots of fun with Adirondack Trailways. But you need to be careful when it comes to the luggage you take. Each adult passenger is only allowed two items of baggage. These can be cases, boxes, garment bags, duffel bags, or sports bags. Each child can have one item of checked luggage. Your driver or a customer care representative will store these checked items in the hold underneath the seats.

There are also some very strict weight restrictions in place. Each piece of checked luggage must not exceed 50 pounds. The price of a ticket allows you to check two items that must not weigh more than 100 pounds combined. It’s best to weigh your bags before you travel. If your luggage exceeds these limits, you’ll have to pay a surcharge.

Before you travel, write your name and phone number on your luggage labels. You’ll need one for each bag. And you can take a single item of carry-on luggage. Just make sure you store it in the overhead compartment when you’re not using it.

You’ll be glad to know that Adirondack Trailways provides insurance for luggage. But there’s a coverage limit of $250 for adults and $125 for children. If you’re transporting precious cargo or expensive personal items, contact the customer care team with details. Additional coverage is possible, but you’ll need to pay an additional fee.

Adirondack Trailways operates a check-in procedure for large luggage items. You must declare your bags to a representative of the company before you board. Each bag must be properly labeled.

There are also some very strict rules regarding the dimensions of bags and cases. In most cases, an item of luggage can’t exceed 62 inches in length, width, or height. Skis and snowboards are exempt, but only if they’re properly packaged. This isn’t surprising, as Adirondack Trailways operates services to a range of winter sports destinations.

Check the website for the list of prohibited items. They include furniture, explosives, weapons, acids, and batteries. You may be able to transport electrical equipment in the hold, but only if it’s stored in the original packaging.

If you’re in any doubt about the baggage requirements, call the customer care team at Adirondack Trailways. Certain exceptions to the rules are possible in some circumstances. For example, it’s possible to check in more than two bags for a small fee.

Track Your Bus’s Route

No one likes to wait for a bus. There’s usually no way of knowing exactly where it is, or when it might finally arrive. And if you have plans, bookings, or reservations, the whole situation can get very stressful.

But Trailways of New York has come up with a handy solution to this age-old problem. The website now has a “Where’s My Bus” function. Go on the website, and enter your departure location, your destination, and your time of departure. Click “Check Status,” and you’ll see the exact location of your ride on a map. The service also provides estimated departure and arrival times.

What About First-Time Visitors?

Adirondack Trailways is ideal if you are a first-time visitor. You can sit back and relax, and maybe take in some of New York’s stunning scenery. You probably don’t know your way around the region, so this takes the stress out of getting from A to B.

Rather than get stressed out behind the wheel of a car, you can let a professional driver take the strain. You can even treat the journey as an integral part of your trip. And that’s easy to do. Every passenger gets access to unlimited free Wi-Fi. There’s a power outlet for your electrical gadgets, too.

Whether you have a specific destination in mind or you simply want to explore the stunning New York landscapes, traveling with Trailways is relaxing and fun.

Travel in Style and Comfort

Many people in the New York City area opt for a cab, Uber, or Lyft to get around. These options are fine for short distances. But what if you want to explore the rest of New York State? Or even the wider region? You could take a train or a plane, but you’ll pay a hefty price.

Trailways fares are, on average, far cheaper than the equivalent air and train fares. You can travel directly from Manhattan to locations across the state and beyond. And you can do so in style. Trailways buses are comfortable and conducive to rest. And traveling by bus lets you see all the natural beauty this part of the world has to offer.

Other Services Offered by Adirondack Trailways

Commuter Services

If you commute with Trailways of New York, you can expect some seriously impressive benefits. You’ll get dedicated customer support, a comfortable journey every time, and the opportunity to avoid the chaos of New York’s main airports.

Most importantly, however, you’ll save yourself an enormous amount of money. Flying or traveling by train is notoriously expensive. But if you purchase multi-ride tickets from Adirondack Trailways, you should save a small fortune.

Student Services

Students can get some hefty discounts for travel to and from college campuses in the area. Additional college routes appear on the schedules during breaks. And in many cases, you can travel from New York City’s Port Authority Bus Terminal directly to your campus. As well as special student fares, there’s an additional 15 percent discount when you present your college ID card.

Airport Services

Traveling to and from airports in New York State is often stressful and time-consuming. Make sure you get to your flight on time and relaxed by booking your spot on a Trailways airport service. They operate to and from three New York State airports:

  • Albany International Airport
  • Syracuse Hancock International Airport
  • Buffalo Niagara International Airport

Long-Distance Travel on the NeOn Bus

You might think that a journey from New York City to Montreal is too long to take by bus. But this long journey is much more bearable on the NeOn bus. Travel to Montreal from Manhattan in luxury aboard a Trailways long-distance coach. The seats are bigger, softer, and more comfortable. And you can catch up with some sleep — instead of fighting your way through airport security.

Coach Charters

Group travel is very expensive these days. Whether you’re with a large, extended family or business colleagues, the cost of buying individual tickets can be prohibitive. But by chartering your own Trailways bus, you can save money and travel together.

Traveling on a chartered coach means you don’t have to share the space with strangers. You get added privacy and the comfort of traveling with people you know. There’s no set fare for a charter with Trailways. The price you pay depends on the number of passengers, the length of the journey, and the date of departure. Fill in the booking request form on the website, and a member of the customer care team will contact you with a quote.

Top Tips for Traveling with Adirondack Trailways

Arrange Your Own Wi-Fi for Long Trips

Although you get free Wi-Fi, each passenger has a relatively small allowance of 100mb. And this includes both uploads and downloads. This won’t allow you to watch videos or stream music for more than a few minutes. You can purchase additional Wi-Fi data, but arranging your own may be a cheaper option.

Pack Some Food

Most services include at least one stop during the course of a journey. You’ll be able to pick up a few snacks along the way. But for longer trips, pack some of your own snacks and drinks. You’re allowed to eat and drink on Trailways buses, but you must clear up your litter before you disembark.

You Can Use Third-Party Tickets

Trailways of New York has a reciprocal travel arrangement in place with Greyhound. In fact, you might end up on a Greyhound bus for your Trailways trip. The Trailways customer care team may honor your third-party ticket, but check before you travel.

Text, Don’t Call

You can use your cell phone on Trailways buses. However, the official policy is one of restricted use. You’re asked to text wherever possible, with the volume turned off. If you have to make a voice call, limit it to 30 seconds. You’re also asked to be as quiet as possible. And profanity is strictly prohibited.

Take the rules regarding the use of cell phones seriously. If you repeatedly flout them, the driver may remove you from the bus.

Don’t Forget Your ID if You’re Traveling to Canada

If you’re a U.S. citizen traveling into Canada, you’ll need to pack your passport or passport card. You’ll need to present your ID at the border crossing. Other acceptable forms of ID include a state-issued driver’s license and a traveler card (FAST, SENTRI, or NEXUS).

Check the Status of Your Service Before You Set Off

Trailways services are very reliable. But there’s always a chance that unforeseen circumstances could lead to delay or cancellation. Call the customer care team or the departure terminal to check on the status of your service.

Tip Your Driver

Trailways drivers are among the friendliest and most conscientious professional drivers in the state. They’ll do everything possible to ensure your trip is safe, comfortable, and enjoyable. Show your appreciation by tipping the driver when you reach your destination.

Book Well in Advance

You can save a lot of money by booking in advance. Even if you change your mind at a later stage, the administration fee is just $20. This makes the risk well worth it — given the possible savings.

Demand for seats on Trailways services is at its highest during holidays. Demand also spikes during the height of summer and the skiing season. To avoid disappointment, buy your tickets as early as you possibly can.

Adirondack Trailways and all its affiliated services have a great reputation. They’re very reliable, comfortable, and safe. Not only that, they’re actually lots of fun. Make a Trailways journey part of your next NYC vacation, and broaden your travel horizons in style.
