What to Do This Week in NYC (February 18 – February 24)

Visitors wondering what to do this week in NYC have plenty of choices. Although the chocolate festivals and romantic dinner specials of Valentine’s Day are over, the city — as always — has many events to choose from. In addition to the walking tours, historic attractions, museums, and people-watching, consider attending any one of these the week of February 18-24.

What to Do This Week in NYC for Foodies

Cassoulet War

You don’t have to travel to France to enjoy all the complex and warming flavors of a traditional cassoulet. The dish — which typically contains meat, pork skin, and beans — is comfort food at its most luxurious. On February 18, from 7-9:30 p.m., the Kimpton Hotel Eventi will be the site of the 5th Annual Cassoulet War, hosted by New Jersey-based food importer, D’Artagnan. Twenty-four chefs from the Tri-State area will compete, and you get to taste each cassoulet and judge. Tickets get you French wine and Armagnac brandy, cassoulet tastings, and entry into a raffle for roundtrip airfare to France.

New York City Beer Week

What better time to visit NYC than during the annual New York City Beer Week, running from February 23-March 2? Join your fellow beer lovers at the kickoff event on the 23rd at the Brooklyn Expo Center. The event is hosted by the NYC Brewers Guild and includes a tasting glass and samples from approximately 75 brewers across the U.S. — 30 of them local to the city!

Charcuterie Masters

Meat lovers rejoice! The fourth annual Charcuterie Masters event takes place at Flushing Town Hall on February 23, from 6-9 p.m. Appropriately in this Chinese Year of the Pig, the festival celebrates eight categories of charcuterie, including country ham and prosciutto, fermented/dry sausage, pate, and bacon. Tickets include unlimited sampling of dozens of varieties of charcuterie, along with beer and cider pairings.

NYDF: New York Dance Festival

The New York Dance Festival takes place February 21-24 at the Roosevelt Hotel. Watch dance competitions in Latin and ballroom dancing, at all levels, ranging from pre-teen and youth to pro and senior. Be part of the energy, as seen on shows like Dancing with the Stars and movies like Silver Linings Playbook. The festival is held in the hotel’s Grand and Terrace ballrooms.

The Orchid Show

The 17th annual Orchid Show begins on February 23 at the New York Botanical Garden, and runs through April 28. This year’s show celebrates Singapore, with a focus on that city’s “Supertree” vertical habitats and its Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come marvel at the myriad varieties of orchid, in a dazzling kaleidoscope of colors.

Learn about local abolitionists, Civil War heroes, artists, doctors, and more.

What to Do This Week for Kids

New York International Children’s Film Festival

This film festival has been around for more than two decades, and this year’s iteration kicks off on February 22 at the SVA Theatre at the School of Visual Arts. Children’s films from around the world are screened for four weeks at various theaters throughout the city. Purchase tickets to see a single film, or a pass to see them all, as well as special talks and an awards party.

Night at the Museum

Make a trip to New York City memorable for you and the kids with an overnight stay at the Museum of Natural History on February 23. This includes a flashlight tour, evening snack, breakfast and more, all under the watchful eyes of the museum’s famous T-Rex and blue whale.
