Ask anyone who lives in NYC and chances are many will tell you that summer is the best time to visit. The city lights up with the sunlight, everyone takes to the streets on evenings and weekends, and fun outdoor events abound! Everyone wants to spend time outdoors in the summer and most of the best NYC events happen at outdoor venues, parks, rooftop bars and more, which means you can indulge yourself in the warm weather and get a taste of the city life. Check out some of the best events that are happening in June in NYC this year.
Coney Island Mermaid Parade
The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is one of the city’s most iconic — and craziest — events. Each year, this event attracts marchers and spectators to the beach at Surf Avenue, the main drag of Coney Island, in order to take part in the festivities. The parade features King Neptune and Queen Mermaid (usually played by celebrities who have been nominated to hold the titles) leading a procession of marchers in outlandish glittery and skimpy costumes through the neighborhood. It’s an all-day affair so plan ahead in order to maximize the fun!
Jazz Age Lawn Party
If you’re looking to have a revelrous afternoon, head to Governors Island for the Jazz Age Lawn Party. It’s a fabulous event where you get to dance in the open air, dress up in speakeasy style and pretend you’re living in the Prohibition Era. Indulge in an old-fashioned cocktail, don your period attire and get ready to dance all day in the sunshine! The event takes place on two weekends, the weekend of June 16/17 and the weekend of August 25/26. Each day starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m.
Red Hook Fest
This year marks the 25th annual Red Hook Fest, which takes place at 1 Beard Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, just next to the IKEA store. The festival features free live music and dance performances on the Brooklyn waterfront. You can also enjoy activities, workshops, community services, games, amazing food and awesome artists! It’s a great way to spend the day with the whole family. This year you can expect to hear international fusion from Pelirroja, Bombazo Dance Company and more!
Governors Ball Music Fest
Governors Ball is one of NYC’s biggest and most anticipated festivals. It takes place on Randall’s Island Park, a gorgeous little patch of land on the water with lovely views of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The festival takes place from Friday, June 1 to Sunday, June 3 — you can get tickets for the entire weekend or just for one day. You’ll find tons of outdoor tents serving food, drink and other goodies. This year, Jack White, Eminem and Travis Scott are headlining, but you can also catch the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lil Uzi Vert and Vic Mensa, among many others!
Brooklyn Film Fest
Brooklyn Film Fest takes place from Friday, June 1 to Sunday, June 10 and features a number of competitive, independent and international films that often go on to become blockbusters! You can find films at a number of different venues, including Wythe Hotel, Windmill Studios NYC, Syndicated, UnionDocs and more. It’s a great chance to see movies featuring up-and-coming stars!
June in NYC is packed full of amazing events! Make sure to plan ahead so you can fit in everything you want to do while you’re in town!
