No trip to NYC is complete without a stop at a Broadway show. Broadway is the epicenter of the theater world, right in the heart of Times Square, and it’s where you can see some of the world’s highest-quality theater. If you are traveling with your kids, fear not — the theater is still a great destination for your whole group. In fact, there are several musicals playing on Broadway right now that audiences of all ages will love. Here are the best Broadway shows to take your kids to in 2018.
Disney’s The Lion King
“The Lion King” is a Broadway classic that’s been playing on the Great White Way since July 8, 1997. The musical tells the same story as the legendary Disney movie (of Simba, Nala, Sca, and the gang), with some new songs added in (and some replaced). One of the best parts about “The Lion King” is that it was directed by artist Julie Taymor, and is performed with elaborate puppetry. The kids will love the family-friendly story, familiar plot and famous songs, and you’ll love being wowed by the stunning choreography and art of the scenic and costume design.
Dear Evan Hansen
If you have kids who are pre-teen or older, you’re going to want to take them to see “Dear Evan Hansen.” This musical, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2016, and it has been a huge success at the box office. The musical tells the story of a high schooler who has social anxiety and accidentally gets himself wrapped up in the suicide of a classmate, who he wasn’t actually friends with. Kids relate to the story of “Dear Evan Hansen” because it tackles many issues relating to what it feels like to be a kid today. The pop music of the score is also insanely catchy, and you can be certain that you’ll leave singing the tunes.
School of Rock
This musical, based on the famous Jack Black movie, was written by musical theater Andrew Lloyd Weber, who also wrote hits like “The Phantom of the Opera” and “CATS.” “School of Rock” has a cast made up of both kids and adults, so kids will get a kick out of seeing actors their own age up on the stage. The story of “School of Rock” will appeal to audience members of all ages: a wannabe rockstar becomes a substitute teacher at a prep school, then he takes his students and turns them into a rock band to compete in a competition. Everyone in the family will love this musical for its endearing humor, great rock music and a totally impressive cast.
It might surprise you, but the musical version of “Spongebob SquarePants” is considered by both adults and kids to be one of the best new musicals of the last few years. Although the famous cartoon has been turned into a musical starring actual live humans, the show doesn’t lose any of its original bright, colorful and cartoonish vibe. Little kids will love “Spongebob” because they’ll get to see their favorite characters onstage, while you’ll love it because it’s funny, charming, outstandingly sung, acted and danced.
