When you think of New York City, a lot of things probably jump to mind. But one thing that the Big Apple is definitely known for is the lights and stages of Broadway. The best Broadway shows attract millions of people to town to take in live entertainment and see stars perform their favorite shows and songs. Every season, Broadway features a new wave of musicals, plays and revivals to dazzle their audiences. Many of them go on to win Tony Awards and high critical acclaim around the world. You can find something for everyone on Broadway, from artsy spectacles to family-friendly hits and dozens of theaters featuring shows for huge audiences and smaller treats for more intimate crowds. Here are some of the most beloved Broadway shows that even the stars themselves rave about.
Angels in America
Tony Kushner’s epic and expensive play returns to Broadway once again in a new production that audiences love. This one is starring Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane, both longtime heroes of the stage. It’s intellectual, lyrical, funny and tragic all at once and will mesmerize you with its tenderness and depth.
The Book of Mormon
This hilariously gleeful and obscene musical was written by writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of “South Park,” with music composed by Robert Lopez of “Avenue Q” fame. It pokes fun at America and religion in a subversive way with smart, scathing writing about a pair of wayward Mormon proselytizers in Uganda. It’s definitely one that musical lovers will want to check out!
Dear Evan Hansen
This is a fairly new show that is getting a lot of attention for its amazing performances and beautifully told storyline based on Steven Levenson’s book. It follows the life of a high school student whose classmate has committed suicide and how he and the other characters cope with the tragedy and the shape of their new lives. The musical score was written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, a young duo with a knack for writing catchy pop songs.
It’s impossible to craft a list of the best shows out right now without including “Hamilton”, the masterpiece created by Lin-Manuel Miranda. He writes the story of Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers in a mix of hip-hop, rap and radio-friendly pop, while taking a deep look at the story of immigrants in our country.
The Lion King
Parents and kids alike will be super charmed by the Disney story based on the original movie and music of Elton John and Tim Rice. The African rhythm and music, costumes, and set design are outstanding, and the stars make Simba’s story and rise to king gorgeously entertaining on the stage.
School of Rock
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, who scored “Phantom of the Opera,” and Glenn Slater, this musical was an instant classic. It’s all about a kid band that is formed in a prep school but takes a fresh spin on the idea of high school kids acting out. The students are extra cute in their uniforms and the story will wrap you up as it unwinds and you get to know the characters’ true intentions.
