One of the great things about going to the theater in New York City is that there are new Broadway shows arriving on stage all the time. If you’re thinking about taking in a stage play, musical or one-person show during your next visit to NYC, here are five new productions to look out for in 2019.
Exciting New Broadway Shows Coming Soon
1. The Cher Show
Fans of the music and movie legend are in for a real treat at the Neil Simon Theatre next year. The Cher Show is a lavish musical based on the life and times of the acclaimed singer. While there’s a cohesive narrative throughout, audiences will be treated to renditions of her classic hits, including “If I Could Turn Back Time” and “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves.” The story begins with a child on a tricycle, and ends with Cher reaching the pinnacle of both the music and movie industries.
2. To Kill a Mockingbird
While the actual premiere will take place in late 2018, To Kill a Mockingbird is expected to be the most exciting new arrival in Broadway during 2019. Written for the stage by West Wing writer Aaron Sorkin, the story is based on Harper Lee’s classic novel of the same name. This honest, and often brutal, depiction of intolerance and selective justice in the American Deep South is expected to dazzle audiences at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre. And with star actor Jeff Daniels as Atticus Finch, expect a production of the very highest quality.
3. True West
Starring Ethan Hawke and Paul Dano, True West is the story of a screenwriter and a lowlife who share a California home with their mother. This passionate and often fiery stage play will feature arguments, years of suppressed resentments and a few unexpected twists and turns in the plot. Playing at the American Airlines Theatre on West 42nd Street, True West is going to be packed with talent and controversy — everything avid theatergoers could want from an evening on Broadway.
4. Kiss Me, Kate
This classic musical comedy makes its long-awaited return to Broadway in February, 2019. Backed up by classic Cole Porter songs, Kiss Me, Kate is the story of two divorced performers who have to star alongside each other in a production of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. The tunes are catchy, and if you’re of a certain age they could well be familiar, too. Starring Kelli O’Hara and directed by Scott Ellis, this classic musical is fun, sad and toe-tappingly enjoyable from start to finish. You can catch Kiss Me, Kate at Studio 54 on West 54th Avenue.
The same company that brought you the stage version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory brings you the musical stage version of Beetlejuice. The iconic ghost played so superbly by Michael Keaton on the big screen is back for more spooky antics in March, 2019. The show will feature the same plot as the original film, along with a few new songs for good measure. While the world premiere will take place in Washington, the lavish spectacle will move to its permanent home — the Winter Garden Theatre — in 2019. Alex Brightman plays the title role in what is expected to be an exciting mix of classic Broadway musical, comedy and mild horror.
There are many more exciting Broadway shows headed for New York City in 2019. But these five are expected to be some of the most popular — so get your tickets early!
