City Parks SummerStage
City Parks SummerStage is one of the coolest ways to see your favorite bands. The company puts together amazing lineups every summer and hosts outdoor shows in both outer-borough NYC parks and the mainstage at Central Park. Get your tickets in advance for one of the artists they have scheduled this summer, including George Clinton, Parquet Courts, Japanese Breakfast, and more. Shows run from May 19 to October 1, rain or shine. Stand outside in the warm summer weather and listen to the music float through the air — it’s an experience you won’t want to miss!
Electric Zoo is NYC’s biggest Electronic Dance Music (EDM) event and celebrates its 11th summer this year. For EDM fans, it is one of the biggest attractions in the world and concert-goers show up in outrageous festival outfits to dance and party along with their favorite artists. The show takes place at Randalls Island Park from August 30 to September 1, also Labor Day Weekend. This year’s lineup features a ton of big-name stars like Armin van Buuren, Kaskade, Afrojack, and Benny Benassi. In addition to music, they also offer an array of delicious food from local vendors.
This is one classy way to celebrate summer. Pinknic takes place on July 19 and 20 at Randall’s Island Park — a great setting for summer fun. From noon to 9 p.m. each day, 12,000 people dressed in all pink and white show up for this rose-themed festival. Bring a pink blanket and grab a seat on the lawn where you can soak up the sun, indulge in some pink champagne, and hear music on the big stage. This year’s headliners include Mark Ronson, Chromeo, Breakbot, Pnau, and others who will be DJing into the night.
Governors Ball is one of the few big-tent music festivals to take place in NYC and people start getting hyped about it months in advance. The event brings in big-name artists in genres across the board, including rap, hip-hop, indie, metal, pop, and more. It takes place May 31 to June 2 at Randall’s Island Park, which you can get to via shuttle or ferry from Manhattan. The lineup this year is chock full of internationally renowned stars, including Tyler, the Creator, Lil Wayne, Florence and the Machine, Major Lazer, The Strokes, Nas, SZA, and more. Afropunk is one of the coolest and most eclectic festivals in the city. It’s a mix of music and culture that takes place on August 24h and 25 at Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn. The event is centered around celebrating multicultural arts and features big musical acts, food trucks, live art, a craft market, and more. Headliners this year include Jill Scott, FKA Twigs, Leon Bridges, Santigold, and Tierra Whack. There will also be a number of famous DJs spinning beats throughout the day and night.
Hot 97 Summer Jam
If hip-hop is your jam then you will definitely want to grab tickets to Hot 97 Summer Jam on June 2. It is hosted by local hip-hop radio favorite Hot 97 and takes place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It’s easy to get there via NJ Transit. This year’s festival features some of the biggest names in hip-hop today, such as Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Swizz Beatz and Friends, Cardi B, and Migos. The festival also showcases a lot of up-and-coming talent, so you just might leave with a new favorite artist.
Lincoln Center Out of Doors
This year is the 49th season of Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors festival, which features a variety of exciting music and dance performances outdoors at the plazas of Lincoln Center. The festival runs from Wednesday, July 24 to Sunday, August 11 and is one of the best things to do in the summer in NYC. Not to mention that it is free! This year’s lineup includes Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, MTV and Save The Music, H.E.R., and Samm Henshaw.
