July is the time when summer really starts heating up and a celebratory spirit is in the air. New York City is one of the best places to be on the Fourth of July, with the world-famous fireworks displays and the sparkling lights of the city kicking off the Independence Day festivities. But that’s not all the city has going on in July! From the first day of summer, there are dozens of events and activities to appeal to locals and visitors of all ages, including rooftop films, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, music festivals, museum exhibits, and more! Check out some of these notable events coming up this July and be sure you don’t miss out on all the happenings in NYC.
July 4th Fireworks
The Fourth of July is a pretty big deal everywhere in America — but especially in NYC. Independence Day here means out-of-this-world fireworks displays, hot dog contests, BBQs and picnics in the park, and other amazing Fourth of July events that make this summer holiday sizzle. Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks display is the highlight of the holiday. You can watch the display from a variety of NYC parks, rooftop bars, waterside locations, and more to catch the awesome view of the sparklers set against the city skyline. This year, the fireworks will be set off from barges in the East River, so locations on the east side of Manhattan and west sides of Brooklyn and Queens are ideal for viewing.
NYC Summer Restaurant Week
When Restaurant Week happens in NYC, foodies from around the globe come out in droves. July’s Restaurant Week is no exception and it is your chance to try prix-fixe meals at over 370 of the city’s finest eateries. Here’s the deal: You get to have a $26 two-course lunch or a $42 three-course dinner at restaurants like Jean Georges, Babbo, Le Coucou, and more. It runs from July 22 through August 16 .
Shakespeare in the Park
Shakespeare in the Park is a running series of Shakespeare productions that happen every summer at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The Public Theater offers free plays filled with big stars and the event has become a bonafide NYC institution. Part of the allure is the way that people get tickets — you can’t purchase them in advance, so theatergoers arrive at the crack of dawn to line up outside the theater in the hopes of getting tickets to that day’s performance. People make an event out of waiting for tickets alone! Just show up with a few snacks and a few friends and try to score a pair of tickets to one of the best productions of Shakespeare you’ll ever get to see.
The heat doesn’t slow anyone down in NYC. If anything, it just helps to energize crowds and performers alike! And with so many indoor AND outdoor venues, there is always a packed schedule of summer concerts in the city. This July is no exception. On July 12, you can see Jennifer Lopez perform at Madison Square Garden, one of New York’s most famous concert venues. Billy Joel, Khalid, and John Mayer are also playing solo shows at the Garden later in the month, too. You can catch Iron Maiden at Barclay’s Center on July 26; artists like Parquet Courts, Japanese Breakfast, and George Clinton at CityParks Summerstage outdoor shows; free concerts in front of Lincoln Center at Lincoln Center Out of Doors; and much, much more this month!
Don’t miss your chance to check out some of the most exciting happenings in the city this July!
