Best Events in NYC in January 2019

Starting the new year in New York City is a fantastic idea, and to help you make your travel plans, here are the best events in NYC in January 2019. Some are traditional activities, while some are things that would happen “only in New York,” but all are worth including on your list of things to do in NYC.

The Best Event in NYC in January 2019: No Pants on the Subway

Improv Everywhere has been hosting a citywide “No Pants Subway Ride” since 2002. In the years since, the event has gone international, happening in cities such as Paris, Tokyo, Jerusalem and Moscow. All you have to do to take home a fun story to tell your friends is board a subway car on the designated day (rumored to be on January 13th this year) dressed for the weather, but without pants. The official after-party takes place at Bar 13 at 13th Street and University Place.

Winter Jazz Fest

The annual Winter Jazz Fest, running from January 4th through the 12th, is the perfect place to listen to some cool jazz. The program is currently in its 15th year and has grown from a single location with a handful of musicians to a nine-day, multi-venue jazz celebration complete with hundreds of bands and artists. This event embraces the causes of gender equality and social justice.

Holiday Train Show

The New York Botanical Garden’s annual Holiday Train Show is one of the best events in NYC in January 2019, even though it begins in November. This is a must-see show, even if toy trains aren’t your thing, simply because of the stunning miniature NYC landmarks–this year is the debut of the miniature One World Trade Center. The show runs through January 21st, with January 5th and 12th being adults-only “Bar Car” nights with alcoholic drinks, ice carving competitions, music and fire pits.

Vogue Knitting Live!

Vogue Knitting Live Knitting Show is a showcase of “the yarnic arts,” complete with workshops lectures, design contests and a knitting marketplace. Meet and mingle with other knitters and learn from some of the best from January 25th through the 27th. If you’re a knitter, you’ll likely consider this the best event in NYC this January.

Winter Village at Bryant Park

New York in winter can be simply magical, thanks to places like the Winter Village at Bryant Park. If you’re in NYC around New Year’s, you can catch the village before it closes on January 2nd; lace on your skates to experience the only ice rink in the city with free admission.
