We’re on the verge of the springtime thaw, and as the weather gets warmer, the Big Apple comes alive with fun things to do and see. Here’s our guide to 10 events you won’t want to miss in New York this spring.
1Check Out a Yankees or Mets Game
Like Yankee Stadium, Citi Field has plenty of seats, so you can usually get a good seat or two. There aren’t a ton of great spots for eating and drinking around Citi Field, but you can enjoy selections from the park’s excellent food and beer list. Check out the April 4th opener against the Nationals, or watch the Mets battle the Phillies when they come to town April 22nd through the 24th.
2Raise a Glass or Two
New York City has become a mecca for craft beers. Celebrate the best suds from the city and elsewhere at the Spring NYC Craft Beer Festival on April 5th and 6th. This festival offers tasty pours from great breweries in New York City, along with samples from the rest of America and around the world. Once you’re done at the festival, keep the party going at one of the city’s great beer gardens.
3Take in the Cherry Blossoms
Sunday, April 28th brings the annual Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom festival to Brooklyn. This colorful and fragrant event celebrates the beautiful flower at its peak and expands into a celebration of all things Japanese culture. You can see demonstrations of samurai sword fighting and enjoy Japanese music, food, dance, and drink. This event gets crowded, so pick up your tickets early.
4Celebrate Cinematic Culture
Robert De Niro and others established the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 to give a boost to the devastated lower Manhattan neighborhood. Almost two decades later, the festival remains a hub for feature films and other movie-related events. This year, it will run from April 24th through May 5th. It will feature a discussion with De Niro and longtime collaborator Martin Scorsese, as well as other events.
5Start Your Engines
The New York International Auto Show screeches into town from April 19th to the 28th. Held at the massive Jacob Javits center on West 34th Street, the event typically ushers more than 1 million car fans through its doors. It will have exhibitions, speakers, and the world debuts of several new vehicle models. This is a must-see for any auto enthusiast.
6Spice It Up
Want to add a bit of heat to your New York experience? The New York Hot Sauce expo fires things up the weekend of April 13th and 14th. There will be dozens of different sauces to taste, along with beers and barbecue to enjoy. Visitors can seek out one of the expo’s spicy food eating competitions, as well. The Expo is at the Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint.
The WWE’s signature show WrestleMania comes to New York this year! While the actual event is at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on April 7th, Brooklyn plays host to plenty of wrestling-related action. You can catch a live show at the Barclays Center on April 8th or 9th, along with the “WrestleMania Axxess” display that begins on April 4th.
If wrestling isn’t your jam, how about some sweet jazz sounds? The New York City Jazz Festival is on April 14th at Symphony Space on 30th Street. The Jazz Festival includes an eclectic group of instrumental and vocal performances. Witness the performers here before they graduate to bigger venues.
Got a sweet tooth? Indulge in some of the best sweets at the first-ever New York City Maple Fest on April 14th. The Maple Fest includes plenty of demonstrations and maple syrup samples from the Northeast. You can also nosh on waffles here, and purchase syrups for at-home indulgence.
10A Tasty Festival
What’s better than a Bloody Mary in the morning? How about an entire Bloody Mary Festival? On April 7th, the Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn will present a selection of the City’s greatest Bloody Marys. Pair yours with a savory treat from the Brooklyn bagel bar and cheese station. Promoters call this event the “Sunday Funday Brunch Party of the year,” and we can’t argue with that.
