Why You Should Visit the New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden, which is nestled in the heart of the Bronx, can be a bit of a trek for the average tourist in New York, but we promise–it’s worth the trip. The New York Botanical Gardens are way more than just your average botanical garden, there are frequently world-famous art exhibitions and shows that take place on the grounds among other exhibitions and programs you won’t want to miss. It’s also one of the tourist attractions that New Yorkers and tourists alike frequently visit. Here is all the info you need about the NYBG.

One of the Largest in the World

The New York Botanical Garden is one of the world’s largest city plant conservatories in the world, with acres of indoor and outdoor gardens. The indoor exhibits take you to climes near and far, from an arid desert to the humid tropics. It also incorporates the local landscape with acres of lush natural forest and set at the base of the Bronx River. It’s truly amazing that the concrete jungle of New York City, and transport you to a real-life version of lush plants and flowers.

Events Year Round

The botanical gardens are open year round and host a variety of events throughout the year. The famous roses in the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden bloom in June and September, but there are incredible sights to see at other times as well. Throughout October 2018, an exhibition Georgia O’Keefe’s Visions of Hawai’i is on display, showcasing the late artist’s beautiful renderings of Hawaiian flora. The exhibit features a live flower exhibit as well designed by Scott Pask, a set designer for Broadway shows. For this exhibit and many others, there will be evening events hosted at the NYBG for guests to come and enjoy food and drink while taking in the incredible surroundings. There are also annual exhibits that occur such as the Holiday Train show in the winter, and the Orchid show which always attracts many visitors of all kinds. They also frequently host concerts, theater and poetry events.

A Unique Educational Opportunity

The Everett Children’s Adventure Garden provides a unique opportunity for children to interact with plants and learn a little more about the everyday plants they may encounter. The Botanical Garden also runs frequent educational programming for schools and visitors alike, giving you the chance to go a little more in depth with learning about the cultivation of a garden such as the Edible Academy which teaches about how to grow food and learning about what’s in season when or a workshop on how to plant seeds and plants properly to help them grow! The NYBG is more than just a nice place to walk around, they want to encourage greater knowledge and understanding of the plant word.
